Great post, and expounds a lot of common sense to set people in the right direction.
People really do need to understand how to use the individual equipment they have, and also the associated limitations. I know that I initially spent quite a bit of time searching the net for useful articles and arming myself with information (and learning to use my camera with just a telephoto lens and manual settings) before I added a telescope to the mix.
I then learned so much by actually spending hours under the sky and taking terrible shots, so that I could incrementally improve each facet of the process and solve the problems, thereby understanding what was happening.
And, nice photos Greg!

Greg, the comments above are, unfortunately automated spam - not from real people. I get about 200 attempts at spam per day and currently AKISMET (a WordPress plugin) is filtering them out for me.

I like your article - hard not to since 1/5 of it is from my site :-) I'm wondering if you'd be interested in joining me on one of my Getting Started in Astrophotography Webinars. You clearly have a grasp of what is going on and I like to feature various astrophotographers during the webinar. It is likely to be at an inconvenient time since we're on opposite sides of the world.
